External (FW) Scratch disk in photoshop?

Is using a external firewire hard drive for a scratch disk in Photoshop a better idea than no additional scratch disk at all. I've got a PowerBook, so another internal drive is not an option.

will work fine. but do you really need additional scratch disk for photoshop? I mean how big can your files be? photoshop uses scratch disks to write temporary images and applied filters.
