Hi I have just purchased my first mac and I need help with making slideshows with effect and music do I need to buy extra software for this?

If you're just looking to create DVD with a photo slideshow set to music, iDVD can do that. You can get tutorials and more information in the Help menu.

Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!

are you looking for a presentation program? iWork might be a good option, if you're just looking for a photo slideshow, iPhoto and iDVD should do the job.
