Is there any need to install the software that came with my new Canon XSi...is it just to edit RAW images (can't iPhoto already do that)? Thanks

Yes, iPhoto can do some editing to RAW images,

The Canon software may be able to do more by the looks of it

If you want a better but still free image editor try GIMP
GIMP - for Mac OS X

There are RAW plug-ins for GIMP as well
