Calibrating monitor to printer

How do I calibrate my monitor to my printer? My pictuers always print much darker than I want them to. They look sharp on my monitor but when I print them with my HP Photosmart 3310 they are darker and the color isn't as precise at the picture on the computer. I'm not enlarging them, infact I'm making them smaller so its not the resoultion. Thanks in advance.

at least I don't think so. I use a device, Spyder, which does it for me. There are many many articles and such on the web if you google. It can get a bit technical which is why I gave up and just automated it.
