I've recently inherited a friends old Powermac DP 2.0 G5 after it died a death. After some testing I diagnosed that that PSU had died in it- something that seems quite common.

Having found some detailed instructions online, I sourced a replacement PSU and set about replacing it. All went well with no major problems. I put everything back together and then powered the machine on. The fans whirled to life but there was no video out. I then noticed that the power light was flashing twice and then a break.

I checked on Apple's website and it was saying that 2 flashed is no ram installed. Yet there are 4 sticks installed - surely these all can't be dead? Has anyone got any words of advice? I'll be gutted if it's the logic board as the replacement PSU was really expensive....help!

Alright, so I got my 16GB 2G iPod Touch this summer, and I've recently been having a problem with the power button: It seems to have kind of sunk into the shell of the iPod, so that it's almost even with the rest of the top of the iPod. I can't turn it on/off with the button now with my case on, and even if I take the case off I have to push really hard with my fingernails and try several different places on the button in order to get it to work.

Anyway, I'm firstly curious to know if anybody's had this problem and/or has a remedy for it, but also:

If I sent in my iPod for warranty, since it seems that apple just replaces iPods when they're sent in, and my model (16GB 2G) is no longer in production, do you think they'd give me a new, 3G ipod?

alright, so i have an 80gig ipod video that does not work due to water damage and a 60 gig one that does but seems to be experiencing hard drive problems. i decided i would take the two ipods apart and replace the 60 gig hard drive with the 80 gig one. it turns out, even though both are 5th generation ipod videos, their hard drive have different manufacturers. the 80 gig is a Toshiba hard drive and the 60 gig is an Hitachi drive. so, i got the Toshiba drive out fine (flipped the little black lever connecting the ribbon cable) but absolutely could not get the Hitachi drive out. i have no idea how it's supposed to come out. i don't want to pull it too hard (even though some people have suggested this) in fear of breaking it. i thought maybe i could flip a lever like on the Toshiba drive but it doesn't seem to move.

any suggestions about this would really help.

Okay...so I decided to save money by simply upgrading my hard drive rather than getting a whole new iPod -- my 30-gig fifth-gen is full.

Now, I have repaired my iPod before -- I successfully repaired my headphone jack last month -- so I felt okay in doing this...so I took the hard drive out and even removed the ribbon cable connecting it (that is, removed it from the motherboard). I took the battery out as well.

(I accidentally turned the iPod on after I took the hard drive out...it was kind of spooky -- it still gave me all the menus and the ability to select all my music...the artists, albums, and song titles were still there! It's obvious that iTunes puts this info in the firmware...)

Then I realized the hard drive I bought isn't compatible (D'OH!!!!) -- meaning physically impossible to even attempt to connect, so I put the old hard drive back in, making sure the connections were correct, etc. When I started it up, I got the sad face with the Apple service URL.

I reopened the case and checked to make sure all was connected properly...it was, according to the videos I saw and from prior experience....still gave me the sad face....AND a "Very low battery" warning, which was strange because the battery was fully charged before I took the thing apart...and the battery was connected securely and with the connector in the proper way.

I know the hard drive is connected properly because I heard and felt it spinning up.

I tried plugging in the charger for a while to make the "Very low battery" message go away, but it kept coming up.

I was able to get the iPod to boot in disk mode, but it would either give me the checkmark screen saying it was OK to disconnect, or the "Do not disconnect" screen. Nothing else.

Also, I was able to get the iPod to boot into diagnostics mode. The tests ran fine -- except (unless I'm interpreting things wrong!) it thinks that the hard drive has a 96-gigabyte capacity!

Now...this whole time, I also tried connecting to my MacBook (my main computer), and the MacBook never recognized it....it was as if I didn't plug in any devices at all.

And one thing I will admit...and this might give me the answer to my big question, but I figured I'd ask anyway...during the time my iPod was open, my finger slipped when I plugged the battery back in and I saw a tiny spark (VERY tiny, like maybe a few millimiters) in the corner near the connector...I thought nothing of it because once I connected a hard drive incorrectly to my AmigaOne and the motherboard literally smoked but after I reconnected all worked perfectly.

So, all you DIY-ers...does this sound like I killed my iPod (in addition to blowing money on a hard drive I can't use)? Should I try other things, or should I just consider a new iPod as my annual expensive Christmas gift to myself? (This one was my expensive Christmas gift to myself in '05...)

I replaced the battery a few years ago and now 1 out of 10 times I sync it says it's memory is corrupt and it re-formats the hard drive or something. This works but I think it's on it's last leg. It's really been relegated to the kitchen radio and in car use for a while now.

Which new ipod is right for me?
My uses:
Lately I've been using my sony phone at the Gym but its special headphone adapter is wearing out and it won't sync with itunes. (AT&T wouldn't let me get the iphone without a data plan and I just wanted a phone that plays MP3s and makes calls)
I was doing a lot of travel for work and I got a PSP which works awesome as a video/mp3 player plus it plays (mostly crappy) games.
I've started using the PSP as a portable web browser around the house. It works but not very well.
I have Harman Kardon Ipod link bridge thingy for my home theater and the BMW Ipod connector in my mini. Both were big wastes of money because they just don't do a good job controlling the ipod.
Oh yeah and I'm really cheap I'm eyeing the refurbished ipods on the apple site. I've been happy with my refurb imac.

I was thinking about the shuffle but I really don't like that my ipod compatible stuff wouldn't work with it. Plus, there are NO buttons on the new one! What's up with that?

The touch has lots of added features but it's larger then I'd like at the gym. Is it tough enough for the gym? My phone has fallen on the treadmill a couple times. Does the web browser work well? What would my extra $10 get me in the 2nd gen touch that I wouldn't get with the 1st gen

Should I consider the classic or nano?

Hi Everyone,

I just bought a brand new Macbook Pro (my first Mac experience, and i LOVE it!) and everything works peachy, except when I plug in my 2nd gen. iPod Shuffle (less than 1 year old).

I've downloaded the most recent software for the Shuffle and iTunes 9.0

however when i plug my Shuffle in, it takes FOREVER for iTunes to not only recognize it (takes nearly 5 tries to eventually get it going), but for it to sync songs.

But when I plug in my iPod Touch, it works smooth. I just don't get it. I've restored the Shuffle "x" number of times, but it only works when it wants to.

I know it's not a problem with the Shuffle or my USB cable because it works perfectly when I transfer songs on my PC.

Has anyone else encountered this problem, and if there's any way to get around it, any help would be greatly appreciated.

What happens is I'll find an open connection and successfully connect to it with usually a very strong signal. It'll show up on the top right as connected. However, when I try to go on the app store it'll say "Invalid Argument" and when I try to use safari, the screen dims a bit and just says "Connecting" at the middle and just stays like that.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the problem is with these wifi connections.
