Hi,

I have a second hand G4 PB that I love.

When plugged into the electrical mains it works flawlessly however when I use the battery it works for a while and cuts dead when it feels like it not taking into account how much charge it says is on the battery gauge top right.

Limiting myself to the wall outlet defeats the object of getting a laptop. So I bought a new battery but the same happens which has me baffled.

If really annoying for three reasons.

1 - You loose any work you were doing.
2 - You have to reset the clock and input wireless routers wep kep on reboot
3 - reboot from scratch takes a few mins as you'd expect, still annoying when you didnt ask for it.

Can anyone please offer a clue to what is wrong here and how I fix it?

So I have a MBP 5,1 and a couple of days ago I upgraded the RAM from 2GB to 4GB (this kit) and also upgraded from the stock 250GB 5400rpm to a 320GB 7200rpm (this drive).

Every thing is working out good, its faster and more responsive but for some reason it hangs momentarily when I scroll down a web page, which is often, it hangs or sticks very briefly and then resumes scrolling again. It will do it at least once every web page and sometimes 2 or 3 times. It sounds minor but its very aggravating when surfing and scrolling a lot.

I use a wireless Logitech Nano VX mouse with one of those fly wheels that spins so pages scroll according to momentum of the spin so I thought that maybe its the mouse but it also does it when I use the 2 finger scroll on the touchpad.

So it must be either the hard drive or the RAM.Any thoughts? Also is there an OS X equivalent to memtest86+ and HD Tach, so I can run some diagnostics?

Followed it up with a new hard drive:

The old hard drive, I put into a case and am using it as a back up for now. I haven't really decided what to do with.

Then added a copy of parallels 5, and windows xp pro:

I know it's nothing hard core, and with the mac everything was super easy, ridiculously simple to do. But it made the machine a little more responsive. I also no longer have to lug around the windows laptop. It's nice to be able to do everything on computer, and just hook up an external monitor.

This macbook really is the best of both worlds.

the Segate is 15$ more, but that doesn't matter if it is the better one.
I know its really obvious that I should pick the seagate, but I heard that the WD doesn't do problems as much and it gets higher reviews. plus with the higher RPM, I would loose battery power and it would run hotter, right?
am so confused.
help would be much appreciated.

My Macbook Pro is randomly shutting itself off. It's a 15" Intel Duo Core running on Leopard. I always update my software and treat my computer like a baby. My battery is only 1 year old, but the computer is from 2006. For some unknown reason, these shutdowns have started a month ago.

There is no pattern and there is no setting that it lasts longer or shorter than the other. I've tried on battery power only, adapter + battery, and even no battery. It's been on my lap, on my bed, and on my desk. All led to a random shutdown. I brought it in to the Genius Bar but they said there was no problem (but could be the logic board). Brought it to a third party repair shop overnight and they said it passed every test and it never shut off at all the whole 24 hours.

I am no longer under warranty (as of 4 months ago...) so I am lost. I've read a number of forums and found similar (but not the same) issues with younger macs who just bring them in for repair at Apple.

I can't afford to pay full for a new computer and no one will buy a computer if it just shuts off unannounced.

What ghost haunts my computer?

Hello guys,

I take good care of my Macbook, I really do. In fact, it pains me every time when I see my friend's Macbook covered in her cigarette burns. Anyway, I take care of it a lot, whether or not you are talking about the interior or the exterior - everything.

Yet, the bottom right of my palm rest has chipped off, and the same happened to the bottom left of my palm rest. I have read on the internet that this is due to a structural issue with the white and black Macbooks, and it isn't something that can be remedied. So I let it be, but the crack has been getting bigger and bigger even if I don't try to peel it off by force.

Recently, the top left of my screen's bezel has cracked as well. It began when the bezel was bulging out because something came off of the frame inside. Because of the bulge, the plastic bezel eventual buckled and cracked. It just sucks that I have such an awesome machine, and yet I have to deal with these stupid hardware issues. My machine is working perfectly and at tip-top condition on the inside. But on the outside, my Macbook is literally falling apart.

Now, I don't think external damages like that warrant a brand new Macbook Pro, although that is very tempting. Also, I am way past my warranty period, which means that the Apple Store is probably not going to change the top casing and the bezel for me, even though it is obviously their own design flaws. Even if they do, I am not sure if I can part with my Macbook for the duration of time that they'd take to replace the outer shells.

I am just wondering how some of you are dealing with this issue, which I am sure is pretty common for the most part. Thanks!
