To reduce the number of zombie threads, any thread that has not seen any activity in the last 6 months (or pick your suitably long interval) should automatically be closed to new posts. Or will only be open to the user who created it. Or will display a Javascript dialog warning potential posters that they will be bringing back the undead.

It may take a new vBulletin version to do this, I dunno...just an idea.

Well, we dont have a HUGE problem with bringing back the dead, but usually when a thread is brought back it has a purpose, though often times you are right.. its pointless "wow i didn't know that" posts.
