My wife has a 'late 2010' MacBook Air with:

1.86 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 1067 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256MB
OSX 10.8.5 (12F45)

I also have a couple of Apple TV units. We can stream media from my wife's MBA using AirPlay, but there doesn't seem to be Desktop Mirroring available.

Is this as people would expect?

I can both stream media and use desktop mirroring from my 'late 2011' MBP.

Any thoughts appreciated!

You can fix this with Air Parrot: AirParrot - AirPlay your Mac or PC's screen to Apple TV

Well worth the $10.
