Hitachi: 500GB notebook hard drives announced

Wow! Don't know how long these will take to make it to the MacBook and/or MacBook Pro.

Macworld has an article on Hitachi announcing 500GB hard drives for notebooks:

...The Travelstar 5K500 will be available in both 400GB and 500GB capacities, as well as an "Enhanced Availability" (EA) version designed to work in server environments. The drive employs a Serial ATA (SATA) interface.

The new Travelstar 5K500 also features Hitachi technology including Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS), which stabilizes the drive -- particularly in installations where it may be perturbed by premium speakers that cause the chassis to vibrate. ...

These must surely impact on a battery's charge...

A co-worker asked for some HD upgrades for his MBP. He mentioned something about 500GB drive upgrade. I was amazed there was such a thing currently out. Soon though...

Well, the downside is Hitachi simply added another platter, which means the drive itself is thicker, which means it won't fit in most laptops. Apple's super compact design of it's laptops means it most likely won't fit in them, for now.

As I mentioned before, that one is kind of a cheat because they simply added a platter and made a drive that won't fit in most laptops/enclosures, but it didn't take too long for someone to come out with the real deal:

If you seriously want to stuff 500GB in your laptop, this one is built to the standard dimensions, so you know it'll work.

Make sure that your notebook has enough space for a 12.5mm thick hard drive.

The drive installed in the new Apple Air is only 5mm thick.
