I just sold my iBook, and was thinking about buying a new Powerbook, so does anyone know if they will upgrade the line anytime soon? Does anyone know a timeline of about how often they are updated (the current line is 5 months old, correct)?

Apple just upgraded both the iBook and the powerbook. You can look at mac rumors buyers guide.

If they will get an upgrade they might upgrade the processor for now. Not sure what else they will upgrade. I think they upgrade about 3 months or so ago.

I remember when the 2.5 GHz G5s came out, the people at Apple said that they were having problems putting the G5 in a compact computer, and that not to expect a G5 Powerbook until the end of the year. Well, December isn't TOO far away, so you may just want to hang tight for a bit. But yeah, that buyer's guide on macrumors seems to be pretty helpful. I never knew about it before you posted the link, rman. Thanks.

How does the G5 compare to the G4? Isn't it 64 bit?

No upgrade for a while, from what I've seen.

The G4 is a 32 bit processor, where as the G5 is a 64 bit processor. Also the G5 does run the 32 bit instruction set.

As hinted at earlier, Apple is having trouble putting the G5 cpu into a powerbook. This is, from what I hear, due to issues with heat. My current powerbook already gets pretty warm underneath, I can't imagine what a G5 processor would do to my lap!

January 2005 is my bet. From the looks of that link the second poster put, the iBook only has about 2 months left, and the powerbook 3 months before the next update. Albeit those are only averages . I'm not buying my iBook until at least April anyways.

Even if the iBooks are to get updated before the Powerbooks, that update won't be a G5 processor, because as we've seen with the G4 processors, the Powerbooks get them WAY before the iBooks do. The iBook G4 is actually pretty recent. I think it came out at the beginning of this year or the end of last year!

By the way, while we're on the topic of iBooks, I would just like to say that when I always talk about my Dad's G3 iBook, I'm talking about the newest model of G3 iBooks. You know, it's white and it KINDA looks like a bigger version of the G4 iBook. KINDA. So, I'm not talking about the colored versions of the G3 iBooks.

Next iBook update will likely see a Geforce go 5200 and probably built in wifi. Other than that, I don't know what else it will have, maybe stock 512mb ram?
