Leopard - 64 Bit

So I am an idiot and don't know how this works and cannot find any specs on the Apple site.

Will leopard even work on a 32 bit processor? I have a MacBook Pro with the CoreDuo but not the Core2Duo. It seems very unlike Apple to release an OS that is only usable on computers a year old or newer but that is what I am getting from it.

So school me. Is that the case?

joshbrez will become famous soon enough
Mac Specs: MacBook Pro 15" 2.33 GHz 3 GB RAM
Leopard will work on all Intel-based Macs, as well as on the later PPC-based hardware. I can't remember if it will run on G3s or not, but G4s and G5s should have no problem.

But that said it handles 32 bit applications not that is will run on a 32 bit processor. The fact that he said it is 64 bit from the ground up makes me think it may only be for 64 bit processors. But like I said I am an idiot.

A little OT, but I didn't understand his point of elaborating on the fact it will run 32 bit and 64 bit applications and being the first to do so. Doesn't Vista do this? Wouldn't it have to, otherwise nothing would work on it?

Leopard isn't entirely like Windows, where you're expected to install the 32 or 64-bit variants of the OS based on the system / CPU that will run it.

I see, but you can still run any app on the 64 bit version I assume. Otherwise, nobody would buy the 64 bit version.

I wonder if it will be another PPC->Intel transition or if it will just be a simple matter of recompiling apps for 64-bit systems...

fleurya - I tihnk what they mean by it is that theres the 64bit version, also install it on your 32bit hardware

What you have with Vista is 32bit Vista and 64bit Vista

I think the whole claim is playing on the fact that there is a 32bit version of Vista for the 32bit hardware, something that still happens with many linux distros.

You'll download the 64 build for your AMD64

but for your old pentum 4 D you'll download the 32 build

It sounds good, sure - but I'd find it hard to be confused when trying to pick which version of an OS

The real advantage is that things are going 64bit

Using more than 2GB of RAM per application.. I can't wait and effectivly usign more than 4GB in a system (Can't remember how well Tiger handled that one)

Thats a peeve about the current iMac, Leopard is 64bit, I want to run two aplpications, each using 2GB of RAM but I take away my music player, the OS, a web broswer etc and i've oly got 512 of RAM out of my 3GB left

--

Hardware - bloody annoying stuff

Just a small question: a G5 is a 64-bit chip isn't it? So it should be able to take advantage of 64 bit apps which will be written for Leopard?

Yep, it sure is. In fact Apple bragged some years back that the G5 was a 64 bit chip, but failed to mention that the OS was only 32 bit at the time...

Tiger is indeed 64 bit on G5 machines. Like this new one it would run 32 bit on 32 machines such as the DuoCore Intel or G4 machines.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/64bit/

Thanks for the help guys I am now happy that I can get this OS. The new finder is enough to make me want it.

Does the 1st gen macbook pro have a 64 bit chip? Also, what macs currently have a 64bit chip inside of them? Does the imac?

Thanks

Smeshy
