I just heard on my local news that people using Mac computers now have to worry about hackers just like PC users when downloading off the internet. Something about a back door way in now with OS X.
And that Mac users should use anti virus just like PC users now. What gives?? Has it all changed now for us Mac users? They said that Mac users used to be safe using OS X but that isn't the case any longer.

No, there's been reports of a few viruses as of late and the media are blowing it out of proportion.

are you referring to cracking the OS? Someone will figure that out sooner or later. Common sense and preventative maintenance will prevail though, as far as hackers and such. |

I could do that right now...and advanced Mac users have been able to for years. "Hacking" Macs is no new thing, it's just the fact that no one has really done it maliciously.

There's no way you can remotely take control of a mac secured with all the mechanisms Apple provides. The media is just jumping to conclusions. |

Depending on the software installed and how the firewall is configured, you most certainly could. However, if a network has standard firewall settings enabled, it would be extremely difficult.

I wouldnt even consider what happened a few weeks ago a virus since a virus installs its self and spreads its self. In order to get that "virus" a few weeks ago you had to download the file by clicking on a link to download it then you had to click the file and open it and then type in your admin password and then it would install, its easy to write stuff like just about anyone could use applescript our automator to write a script to say erase your itunes music, but you would have to find someone dumb enough to download it from you and then run it. Now on the other hand on windows if you download a virus it installs its self and goes to work messing stuff up.
