A little more reporting on the issue here:
Some 802.11ac equipment flawed, Apple replacing models with issues | Electronista
TLR version -- Apple will fix this in an upcoming 10.8.x update. It is according to some reports already fixed in the beta for Mavericks, but I wouldn't know. So turns out it was a software thing, not a big deal.
