Rumor: Apple ready to retire iDevice dock connector

Quote:
An unsubstantiated rumor claims that Apple is looking to replace the venerable 30-pin iPhone, iPad and iPod dock connector with a smaller, space-saving successor that will possibly make a debut in the company's next generation iPhone.

The EU is trying to standardize all phone chargers - based on USB of course.
EU Standard Phone Charger Coming This Year - Tech Europe - WSJ
The EU is probably pushing Apple to comply with this.

I hope they go to something like USB as that would be really neat, and plus most people have lots of USB to USB at home.

I wouldn't mind USB-USB connection, but I'm wondering what argument Apple could have against using this...or maybe it wouldn't matter.

Still, to be able to charge any future iDevice with the same old USB cable from my phone would be great.

I just can't stand little, tiny charging connections. I hate mini-usb connections.

Whatever it is, it'd be cool if it had the magnetic connection like Apple's notebooks have. Just pick up your iPhone/iPod/iPad while it is charging and give it a gentle "pull" if it disconnects that easily.

That would be AWESOME, especially due to the fact that I hate tiny connections because they are so unforgiving.

Keep dreaming if you think that Apple would ever deviate from their normal state of proprietary affairs. It's what keeps part of the eco-system ever present. It would also likely mean having to change the power consumption said port is able to sustain, thereby necessitating a [probably] bigger battery. I'm sure there's more to it than that, but I just don't see this happening.

The Mag-safe port on the other hand, this I can see. There were patent reports pointing to this last year. It would make a lot more sense.

I have USB cables from the 1990's that still work. My 30 pin Apple connectors seem to start cracking apart after two years. I'd certainly be happy if a standard USB port was used. I'm not sure I'm ready for wireless charging yet though - more accessories to purchase is no fun.

I detested the multiple connection standards I had to live with in my pre-Apple days, and love the standardization in Apple. I would hate to get back into that rat race again. Expensive, inconvenient and hard on the environment.

Longtime Windows, then onto slippery slope with iPod/iTunes in 2006, then Apple TV, iPad, iMac and finally iPhone in 2011.

Mini USB is possibly the WORST charging connection on any device. For those who dont know; its used universally by Blackberry, HTC and Samsung for their phones. Also many 2.5" external hard drives use it.

i cant count on one hand the amount of issues i get with those connections. they are flimsy and break easily, dont stay in the port properly, sometimes they just snap inside - they are just so awful. If iPhones had mini USB connections - Id stop using them.

The PS Vita has the right idea. Its proprietary, but its quite small. Stays in port, doesnt wiggle around.
