I really hope that they do, i don't know how it's in other countries but here in Sweden we have 4G and have had it for a quite time now. Apple did get a lot of criticism from different newspapers here in Sweden that the 4S did not support 4G. I hope they prove them wrong quite fast.

It's now who i am underneath, but what i do that defines me!

The biggest reason I didn't trade in my iPhone 4 for a 4s is LTE. I really hope next year's iteration is sporting LTE on AT&T so I can sell my 4 and get the 5.

16GB iPhone 5, 64GB Wi-Fi only iPad 1st Gen.

I wonder what if any rate increase the LTE will bring.

One concern I have about increased data rate availability is the rising costs of data packages from providers. Having a wider bitpipe will make it a lot easier to really ratchet up the data usage. Hopefully there will be some palatable pricing schemes along with the release of this phone.

Does anyone know the state of the 4G infrastructure in the US?

I am on Verizon 4G.

Data rate prices seemed to increase but I may have been grandfathered in. I am paying $60/10GB/Month for 4G. On 3G it was $60/5GB/Month. That being said I think normal is $80/10GB/Month now for Verizon 4G. That is data card pricing.

Verizon and ATT got rid of the unlimited data plans but I bought the iPhone 4 when they still had the $30 unlimited plan. I am expecting to grandfather in if I upgrade - it is why I moved over early. I think it is only $30/2GB now for either ATT and Verizon.

Welcome to 4G from Sprint

ATT 4G
AT&T 4G LTE - Wireless 4G Speed with AT&T LTE & HSPA+ - from AT&T
Note ATT 4G=HSPA+=3.5G but the iPhone 4S can supposedly take advantage if ATT turns it on (currently reported not turned on)
4G LTE - is in 5 markets currently.

Only one I have personal experience with is Verizon and the 4G map - has been pretty accurate - I've been getting 4G in Texas, Colorado, and California in the major cities. 3G fallback is still fast enough to handle most web interactions.

So do I. And I hope it carries over to the next generation of iPad.

Does anyone really find this to be a surprise? Apple has more or less flat out said the 4s wouldn't be 4G and the 2012 release (be it iPhone 5, 6 or whatever) would be.

I'm more interested in whether/when Apple will decide to switch over to OLED displays for their iDevices. The iPhone 4/4S's display has held up really well so far, but those Super AMOLEDs seem to be advancing at an impressive rate - I can't wait to see the 720p screen on the Galaxy Nexus.
