Also what if your hard drive dies? How would you install from the net with one Mac with no OS installed?

Also I now have a CAP on my internet and downloading 8GB plus for me is not really an option if I want to use the internet for what I need it for the rest of the month.

I sure hope Apple provides it on a USB Stick or DVD.

As much as the computer world is slowly becoming one that is "post-optical" (optical media), we're not there yet. Also, given that network caps seem to be more common now, digital distribution can't be all there is. So, I agree that there will most likely be an optical/USB version. I guess the MAS copy could be burnable which would allow Apple to justify not selling it in stores while giving consumers the option to make bootable copies of the OS. I'd be okay with that as long as you could make a copy that didn't depend on optical media (no DVD burner here).

I agree - I think Apple's preferred distribution method will be via the App Store - it works well for iOS updates after all. However, I very much doubt they make that the only option.

We'll surely see this OS update available via traditional media as well.

The only way I can think of around that issue, assuming that there is no **** drive or DVD option, would depend upon users always having a clone of their boot drive around. I just don't see Apple relying on that just yet. They would get hammered on every forum/tech site in the country.

Perhaps Apple will provide some means to burn that digital copy to media. The only problem with that is if Lion is like its predecessors it will require a dual layer burn - which are always iffy at best.

Here's where they might learn from Microsoft. MS provides Win 7 (all versions) as a digital download from their on line store. The download can be executed and then burned to a single layer DVD or 2 DVDs in the case of the Ultimate version. MS also mails out an optical version to the buyer.
