So Anandtech has come out with a nice followup to its earlier G5 and OS X performance tests. The G5 acquits itself well, but OS X is suited more for the desktop than the server closet. (I can hear everyone sighing dejectedly now.)

I hope they do more followup tests so we can compare the G5 to whatever Intel foists upon us.

Great article... The G5 definitely got spanked in the server department.

But it does seem to hold it's own quite well as a workstation. Which I found interesting... since as much as I hear folks gripe about the high cost of Power Macs... The base Dell Precision with the dual 3.6 Xeons, which uses the main processor they tested it against, is actually about the same price as the 2.7Ghz PM... Except the Dell has less than half the HDD space, no DVD burner and much weaker video card.

That's not to say there probably aren't better deals out there... And truth be told it's an issue of needs more than benchmarks anyhow. But, I think it just brings the $$$ issue into a little bit better perspective. I'm actually feeling a little less guilty about shelling out 3Gs for my PM this fall.

I am a Mac fan, but I always go with Linux for servers.

Yes, the powermac is very competitive in price and performance as a workstation. When it came time to get a new computer I looked at getting a PC or building one myself and was frustrated with the price tag it took just to get it operational. Then I looked at mac and realized what I'd be missing.

Anyone who thinks macs are overpriced is still living in the 90s. They're more competitive (especially when you consider the quality factor) than they ever have been!
