Maybe it's just me, but I think that I would prefer the ability to just click wherever the option is, as opposed to scrolling through something.

With a mouse, yes. But what about hand gestures? Apple is thinking forward, as they always have, which is why they're such a great company.

Having a whole heap of things to click on the screen is nice but does use up too much screen real estate. Personally I think a nice neatly organised way to move through the options would be good. And it really seems Apple have the Magic Mouse/trackpad in mind with this idea.

As with any of these stories, it REALLY HELPS to bear in mind that Apple patents a TON of stuff they never use, or heavily modify. What we call "Stacks" today is a perfect example -- it was first patented a decade ago and ended up being pretty much NOTHING like the original patent.
