Steve deserves a raise. Maybe Apple will double his salary to $2. I gotta believe some of the "extra" business has to be coming from switchers. I hope the majority of it is.

I'm targeting it at 45 by late next week if the market stays on track (which it should)

The news literally knocked me out of my chair.

Definitely going out to celebrate and tonight the drinks are on me!

Also note, the "Music business" accounted for 38% of revenue; the "Macintosh business" accounted for 62% of revenue. So much for the theory that the iPod is the only Apple product with growth potential.

(Note that "Macintosh business" includes software sales: Tiger, FinalCut studio, iLife, etc. "Music business" includes iPods and music store sales.)

There's a good way to break it down. In a previous post I made, the main point I was trying to make was that if Apple were to completely drop it's Mac business, it would still be very well off.

Quote:
It’s music business (iPod included) made up 38% of Apples total revenue according to Apples Q2-2005 results. That’s more than double the revenue generated by it’s top-selling Mac model (the iMac/eMac) and over half the total revenue generated by Apple’s entire Mac business (all of the models combined), which includes OS’s, software, peripherals, devices, and third-party retail. On top of that, the iPod’s significance in Apple’s total revenue is just one factor; we must also assume the factor operating expenses (R&D, SG&A, etc) plays in Apple’s net-income. A significant portion of these expenses are set aside for Apple’s Mac sector - while it would be impossible to get the exact percentage, it is postulated that Apples Music sector is much lower maintenance than it’s Mac sector.

Another interesting factor is GPM: While Apple does not specify the GPM of individual products for competitive reasons, it has mentioned that it’s overall iPod line GPM is roughly over 20%. As I mentioned earlier, Apple’s top-selling Mac model is the iMac/eMac, a product that is extremely popular with Apple’s strong educational market. The GPM is drastically reduced for products sold through Apple’s educational store – so I could say that Apple’s top selling Mac also happens to be Apple’s least profitable Mac.

The growth of the computer market to me seems like it has more potential to grow then the ipod market. This is because eventually every single person that wants an IPod will have one, and mac already dominates the majority of the market. But the computer industry is different, mac is the minority and is slowly growing in popularity and dominance. If you own 10% (or wtv it is) of the market on the computer side, and 80% (or wtv it is) on the IPod side...where is there more room for growth?

Just a thought...

15.4" Macbook Pro 1.83Ghz 2GB RAM 80GB HD Mac OS x 10.4.4
1.8Ghz P4 1024mb RAM 2x80GB, 1x160GB, 1x250GB HD's Windows XP and SuSe Linux 9
IPOD 6gb Lime Green Mini

I read yesterday on Yahoo! News about Apple. They were talking about the 'iPod halo', where Windows users are switchng to OSX b/c they love the iPod so much. They said approx. 400,000 windows users switched b/c of the ipod halo
