Apple Computer is expected next week to expand its online music service to Windows-based computers.

The Mac maker has scheduled an event for next Thursday at San Francisco's Moscone West convention hall. "The year's biggest music story is about to get even bigger," Apple said in an invitation to journalists.

Looks like Napster, Musicmatch and BuyMusic.com are not in trouble now.

iTunes Music Store for Windows too late?
October 13, 2003 - 19:10 EDT Some analysts are saying iTunes for Windows may be joining the Windows side of the digital music industry too late, as there are already similar services for Windows users, such as MusicMatch, BuyMusic.com, and Napster 2.0, reports Reuters. "They're going to have a serious problem with the Windows community," said Rob Enderle, principal of market research firm the Enderle Group. "If they could have gone there first, they could have carved out a beachhead." Analysts are also noting that the iTunes Music Store could strike a familiar tune for Apple: "Apple was the first to popularize the graphical user interface, but was ultimately leapfrogged by Microsoft."

My Comments: Interesting article.. I personally think they are going to sell more on the PC version then the mac.. and quicker.. it might not be as good as if they would have released a PC and Mac versions at the same time, but I know that if I was Apple I would always release things to the Mac first

Apple, Pepsi to partner on iTunes Music Store promo
October 16, 2003 - 10:31 EDT The LA Times is reporting that Apple is expected to announce today a promotion deal that would give Pepsi buyers free songs from Apple's iTunes Music Store. "Sources said the unveiling of the pact with PepsiCo Inc. was timed to coincide with today's release of a Windows-compatible version of Apple's iTunes... The sources said Pepsi was expected to craft a multimillion-dollar ad campaign around the music store, which charges 99 cents for each song... Consumers who purchase Pepsi beverages would find codes in the packaging that they could redeem online for free downloads from iTunes. Pepsi will pay Apple for each of the songs downloaded during the promotion, the sources said. They said Pepsi and Apple have discussed offering about 100 million free songs."

My Comments: This is pretty kewl.. I wouldnt mind winning a couple downloads

Apple music event live coverage
October 16, 2003 - 12:29 EDT* MacMinute will be covering Apple's Special Music Event live today, which takes place at 1:00 p.m. ET from the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Apple is expected to debut iTunes for Windows, as well as other iPod enhancements. Stay tuned for full coverage, which will be available here. Incidentally, the iTunes Music Store is presently down, which makes sense in light of Apple's expected announcements.

My Comments: if anybody is going to watch this.. could you post what those iPod enhancements might be or any other novelties? Im quite curious

Apple Launches iTunes for Windows
October 16, 2003 - 14:20 EDT Apple today launched the second generation of its iTunes Music Store for both Mac and Windows users. The new iTunes Music Store offers Windows users the same online music store that Mac users have come to appreciate -- with the same music catalog, the same personal use rights and the same US$0.99 cents-per-song pricing. Since its launch six months ago, music fans have purchased and downloaded more than 13 million songs from the iTunes Music Store, making it the number one download music service in the world, says Apple. With music from all five major music companies and over 200 independent music labels, the iTunes Music Store catalog is growing every day and will offer more than 400,000 songs by the end of October.

Apple, Pepsi to give away 100 million free songs
October 16, 2003 - 14:32 EDT Apple and Pepsi-Cola today announced a promotion to legally give away 100 million free songs to Mac and Windows users from the iTunes Music Store. Beginning February 1, 2004, 100 million winning codes will be randomly seeded in 20 ounce and 1 liter bottles of Pepsi, Diet Pepsi and Sierra Mist, and the winning codes will be redeemable for a free song from the iTunes Music Store. "Winners will simply go to Apple's iTunes Music Store, enter the code found under the bottle cap and choose any 99 cent song from the online store's vast catalog of over 400,000 songs." The Pepsi iTunes promotion will kick-off with a Super Bowl ad on February 1, 2004, and will run until March 31, 2004.

My Comments: Wow! that's some serious money
