Since the "iPhone OS update" thread is quickly gearing towards new iPhone hardware rumors... figured it was about time the topic got its own thread.
Apparently there's references for "iPhone2,1" and "iPhone3,1." What do you guys think are the chances of seeing the iPhone line get some increased diversity apart from just differences in storage capacity (ie. physical dimensions, more/less features)?
I've read several quotes from Tim Cook saying, "We’re not going to play in the low end voice phone business… Goal is not to lead unit sales, but to build the worlds best phone." It would be interesting to see them contradict this and end up making a "slimmed-down" version of the iPhone... as well as a bit disappointing.

thats interesting. I'm excited to see what they come out with. I hope they make one for verizon but i really do not see that happening at all for the next couple years but it'd be nice to be able to get it this year. I think apple is gona come out with some new products based on their touch capabilites. it amazes me how awful other touch screens are compared to apple. i have a voyager and its touch screen is terrible. i bet apple makes some sweet touch products towards the middle or end of this year. well i hope lol

Sounds pretty certain that a new iPhone is coming this Summer, Schiller has already said thats the iPhone life cycle, and these new references in the OS almost seem to confirm that. Two iPhones however, what woud 3,0 be :O.
I just hope it pwns sexy mockups I keep lusting over, a la:
I think it looks beautiful. I really don't think it will get that thin though. I've used an ipod touch and held it to my ear like it might be an iphone, and it's too thin. I felt liked I'd drop it. I do not think the iphone will change in thickness much.
Also correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't seen much on physical changes other than a faster processer, updated bluetooth, etc. I was under the impression it was primarily a OS update
I honestly do not see something like "iChat" coming to the iPhone yet. If it does then I doubt it will be working 3G and only working over wifi. I don't see see that "video stuff" being "transfered" over a 3G Network and AT&T liking that.
I mean, we are FINALLY getting MMS in 3.0. Yet still no sign of Video Recording (that I know of unless I am just mistaken).
May I remind you that video phones have been around for years, they just didn't really take off.
Maybe an Apple spin on it, with iChat for example, would really put a spotlight on the whole video phone aspect again. As long as it was like charged at the same rate as a normal call, that's where "3" got it wrong.
So the lack of video capture does not bother you. Or the rather pitiful speakers that a 4 year old Sony Ericsson can outdo. Or the utter lack of Bluetooth file transfer (I don't know if iPhone 3.0 said it would allow this now, can't quite remember the P2P stuff).
Also, the iPhone is Apple's flagship small portable media device, what is with the whole 16GB high end model, get the Touch's 32GB in there at least, and then try and seek a 64GB drive for even more needy users.
16GB is just not enough to take advantage of the iPhones video, music and app features without deleting stuff to make way for new (a process I have always been too lazy to deal with).
You are correct in saying the battery has to improve, but they can do that and still add direly required features.
