I'm sure this will stir some talk. But the question is. What if???

Read the article. Hear's a quote:

"The technology is so solid that Apple is beginning to sell Macs into markets that never before would even consider them, like the military and university supercomputer centers. Most tantalizing of all is scuttlebutt that three of the biggest PC makers are wooing Jobs to let them license OS X and adapt it to computers built around standard Intel chips. Why? They want to offer customers, many of whom are sick of the security problems that go with Windows and tired of waiting for Longhorn, an alternative. And besides, Apple has buzz now, and Microsoft does not." -Fortune

It was from Fortune. And you have to sign in to read it. quoted from another forum....
"Linky to view the article, go to sign in, type in 188066379. It returned an error for me, but let me view the article anyway."

I am neither a moderator nor a lawyer, so don't get scared, but I'm pretty sure posting the whole article like that would constitute copyright violation. The paragraph you excerpted, for purposes of commentary in this thread, is probably okay under fair use, but the attachment might get you in trouble.

And anyway, on with the discussion...

I wonder which three? And how would that work?
Not that I think Apple wants that kind of competition.

Well, i can honestly see their interest... OS X is revolutionary... but a very big draw of apple (well at least for me) is Style! don't you just love that nice smooth iMac G5? the rounded edges of the mini... HPs and gateways just look so trashy after using a mac... there almost like artwork! well, thats my commentary, but people who don't understand what apple as a company is about and just hate microsoft will buy in for sure. But apple... DON'T DO IT!

It would be nice to be able to see how OS X runs on a a centrino laptop however they wouldn't do something like this for atleast another 5 years until they have gained atleast a another 5 - 15% share. Think about how bad it could back fire on them, if everyone started buying os x HP computers at bestbuy, apple would lose alot of sales

Native OS X support for x86 processors would kill apples hardware sales. The Macs are much nicer looking, but I'd much rather have OS X on a PC...you'll get a more powerful system, at a lower cost.

What does "let them adapt it mean"? Since when have PC box shifters had the ability to "adapt" an OS from one platform to another!

its ridiculous, even if a gray, ugly, craptastic box has os x installed, itll never be a mac, or as good as one. it wont have the style or class, or even come close to the lowest end mac.

I don't see why Apple would do that. They're proprietary as it is. If they did that, sure they'd get revenue from licensed sales, but they also might as well stop making computers. Isn't half the beauty of Apples is that they run on and stand behind RISC processors only?

It's a whole lot deeper than that. There is no way that Apple would license the OS, look at PowerComputing.. that didn't work out at all for Apple and then what makes OS X so stable is that Apple has complete control over the hardware, if you started licensing the OS, there goes that advantage and we would start seeing a whole lot of problems. Apple won't do it.
