The mini only has a radeon 9200

Core Image requires a 9600 or better

Core image has not been in any OS's yet. It pretty much just improves picture editing....nothing most users will realize

Same requirements

Both will run but they will be scaled down so that they can run on the mini graphics card

CoreImage is just a set of routines to speed up some image editing functions. So far, no software uses it, since it isn't out yet. Once Tiger becomes available, developers might choose to use CoreImage to provide fast graphics manipulation features.

"For computers without a programmable GPU, Core Image dynamically optimizes for the CPU, automatically tuning for Velocity Engine and multiple processors as appropriate."

So basically, suppose you have an lower-end Mac, say, a G4 iBook.

- You will be able to run Tiger
- You will be able to run software that uses CoreImage, once it comes out
but
- Software that uses CoreImage will be much slower on the iBook than it wold be on a system with a CoreImage-compatible graphics card.

In other words, older and cheaper computers will be slower than newer and more expensive computers. Just like always, only more.

I don't understand all this fuss around Tiger not running on some Macs...
Apple never had, and certainly will not, bring out an OS that doesn't run on actual and previous generations Macs.
The only thing I can think of is that Tiger might not support the G3 anymore, but even that I'm not really convinced about.
CoreImage and CoreVideo might not run on all Macs, but it doesn't really matter for normal uses anyway. Professional graphic and video editors might benefit from it, but they don't buy low end Macs anyway.

Maybe some of the nice effects won't run on all Macs, but so what??
I installed Panther on an AGP G4 450MHz with the stock ATI Rage graphics card, and it runs very nicely, better than with any earlier OS X version.
Ok, it doesn't support Quartz Extreme, therefore doesn't have some of the effects (like the revolving cube animation when you switch user) but it's very useable and runs just fine.

So, I think you people shouldn't worry that much about Tiger not running on the Mac mini, I'm VERY sure it will, and maybe even faster than Panther, as every new OS X version became faster...

Do you think Minis will ship with Tiger in the UK at some point in early 2005?

No. Tiger will most likely not be released in the US until April-June and it will be a little later in the UK and they won't ship immediately with Tiger. I would say Fall 05

But would they ship a Mac whose OS does not work fully because of the processor?

Would Apple not upgrade the Mini to a better processor in late 2005 to take advantage of the extra features of Tiger?
