That worked really well for them with their PDA. Also, their music player (which was a rebadged version of a Creative Zen, if I remember correctly) was also a complete failure.
Don't get me wrong, I like Dell hardware - and would own an XPS M1330 if it could legally run OS X. But rebadging other companies' products makes no sense. It's like platform sharing at GM or Ford. It's all the same car, but with slightly different styling. In the end, you're competing with yourself (or in the case of Dell, other minority smartphone/PDA/MP3 player makers).
Michael Dell is known to be a Linux user (specifically, Ubuntu). Why he doesn't put together a team to develop their own variant for a 100% Dell-engineered smartphone, is beyond me. If they took a similar tack to what Google is doing with Android, they might have a viable product. But the advantage they'll have (that Google really doesn't, since they're using HTC as the hardware vendor) is the name recognition.
Yeah... and in all honesty, I like their decision to market and sell straight to the consumer (albeit they are doing so begrudgingly). I hate exclusivity deals... HATE them. They only benefit the companies involved. While it just so happens that I'm satisfied with my ATT service, if their service here was poor, then I'd be forced into choosing between having an iPhone and shoddy service, or no iPhone on an alternate carrier with better service. The industry needs to move away from these exclusivity deals... separate the device from the service. Then everyone can thrive or falter on their own merits.

I just saw it on the news also. Wow this thread might just keep running forever!! That would explain why AT&T is pushing hard to extend its contract with Apple.
yeah this thread is just like a dog chasing its own tail i going to get, i going to get, I am going to get it. (when will they, are they, whats takings so long, are they going to do it? so on and so on) I will carry on chasing my tail some day we might get that tail some day i wish but I am sure no time soon (verizon)
I was with verizon for its impeccable customer service and full bars everywhere you go.... until the iphone came out. AT&T has improved a lot IMO compared to several years ago - I'm noticing better reception areas now. As a dev and avid iphone fanatic, I really don't think a carrier change would matter that much.

Do I care that you don't think that the iPhone or similar apple device won't go to Verizon? Nope. You'd have to be crazy to think that apple won't try and make a deal with the largest wireless company in the United States.
And to take full advantage of the iPhone's features it would be much better on an LTE network instead of on a 3g network.

I dunno, iphones are cool and all, but I'm not such a follower that I would actually downgrade to inferior service for one, no matter how much AT&T has allegedly improved. What's the point of an iphone if I have to stand on a box and crane my head out the window just to get decent reception? I hope Apple does make a deal with Verizon because then I'll have a reasonable choice. But until then, I'm happy to let them work the bugs out of the iphone with a subpar wireless service and wait for a real "total package".

It'll have to wait till for LTE and that is probably years away. I just dont see apple making a CDMA version of the iPhone just so verizon can chop all the features out of it ! Did you notice that the Storm has no wifi ? thank Verizon for that.
And I dont know what the deal is with people complaining about AT&t's service here is the same if not better then verizon. I switched from them to get the iPhone 18months ago and I havnt looked back.
Just my thoughts
