There is news that Texas lady is suing Apple, stating that the 20 iMac can not display the millions of colors that Apple promises in their promotions. She states that the 24" iMac is capable of displaying on Apple's promise, however.
This looks like the lawsuit. http://www.appleinsider.com/articles...s_lawsuit.html She must be referring about the 2GHz iMac, because the 2.4GHz has the same graphics card as the 24" iMac. Anyone knows if the 2400XT fails to deliver as per contention? Hope Springs Eternal Welcome... to the house of Rock and Jazz! Last edited by D3v1L80Y; 04-01-2008 at 11:50 AM. |

So the question still remains, IMO. Does the 20" panel display the "millions of colors" that is still being advertised by Apple at the time of the suit. That will be the question that will be considered.

I'd say "no". Banding in gradients is absolutely horrid. You cannot use a 20" iMac for design work. It's a consumer model, not a professional machine.

It can display the millions of colors, but the contrast value may not be the same, or anything else. It is a TN panel, afterall. Her problem is if Apple advertised "color accuracy." Otherwise, I don't see her having a snowball's chance in heck if Apple's lawyers knows a thing or two about this.

It's not just contrast. It's actual colors. If you make a gradient, you notice really really bad color banding. As you get more subtle with the gradient, you see the problem more.
I don't think "It's the display's fault" is a valid argument for Apple. Apple chooses to sell a complete package (software+hardware) in the iMac. If they say it can display millions, it must display millions. It doesn't matter where the parts come from. I still don't think a law suit is necessary though. She should return it, get her money back, and go home. |

But that's not going to happen. One person (and the lawyers) will make a ton of dough. And everyone else with the bad displays get nothing. Perhaps in the future though, Apple will be more honest about their specs. |

There was actually a near-identical class-action lawsuit Apple settled recently because the MacBooks + MacBook Pros were advertised as 8-bit displays and they were 6-bit (which is the same difference as here- millions of colors advertised, but the displays only displayed thousands without dithering, which is blending colors together to create the low quality illusion of millions).
Anyone know if that settlement pertains to this? EDIT: link to MB(P) settlement story: http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com...olors-lawsuit/ Sitting, waiting, wishing... |
