Hi All,

I've has a major crash with my PB G4 alu which resulted in an ever lasting grey screen on boot up. Given that the hard drive has been making a tapping for months, I ordered a new one (http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/p...roducts_id=449) and went about installation merticulously following the steps and was confident the install went well.

However, on boot up, I got the flashing Mac/? icon which I kinda expected seeing as there was no OSX on the new HD. I then put in the 10.3 restore disk and followed instructions through to "select destination"... but the was no volume found. Exactly the same as before.

The "select startup disk" only gives me the option to boot off the CD or a "networked volume?".

I tried restarting whilst holding down the option (shift?) key. Waited for the Hardware Test to start and ghot nothign but a kernal panic with a message saying "were hanging here"

During the instalation of the new HD the orange HD / Motherboard connector came away compltely form both the HD and board but seem to clip back into both connections with ease. Also, I have 4 free available pins (to the left of the connection) that do not seem to be connected to anything at all. This is right?

Is it possible that there was nothing wrong with the HD itself, more an issue with the mechanism operating the HD? I'm also not 100% convinced I have the right drive now!

Any help on this would be really, really appreciated.

OK, so the link doesn't work! The new HD is a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 100GB 2.5" IDE 5400RPM

I've braved the first steps and have partitioned the new drive via disc utility into on 93gig drive. I'vr given it a new name and it seem the partition was sucessfull!

The new drive is now recognised in when I get to the "select destination" stage of the OSX restore but the HD icon has a large red exclamation mark over the top of it!

Any ideas *** to what this means? Don't want to proceed until I find out.

Thanks

latest installment;

It appears all it needed was a reboot to get rid of the red exclamation mark

I proceeded to install OSX by first checking the restore disc. This unfortunately told me to remove the disck, clean it and start again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, how do I get the disc out? I've tried rebooting holding down the option key (apple key) and also holding the mouse button down to no avail.

I currently have the startup disc set as the restore disk, is this whats stopping it being ejected?... it appears so, restarting from the "networked volume" is the key.

The final episode:
after a good hour of CD buffing with AutoGlym's finest polish... the system still ound defects in the CD and prompted for another clean. It also gave an option to "ignor and continue" so I thought sod it; I have no OS and everything has already been lost so I went ahead and ignored....

I'm surfing on my PB again !!!!! God only know how I pulled it off but it worked! I hit many brick walls that I thought were the end but... i'm back

Thanks for letting us know what you went through, Mr.C.

This impromptu How To will surely help anyone else having to install a new internal hard drive in their Apple notebook.

Job well done!

Ha, unbelievable. I am still finding it hard to believe that I managed to overcome this problem with my own hands and technical thinking.... so hearing that my hap-hazard experience will in turn help others really is the ray of sunlight in my stormy day

I'll add one thing though; try to better equip yourself. I used a mini cro-bar and some car polish.... not ideal!

LOL anything is ideal if it gets you going Mr. C.

Do not have a lot of faith in system restore discs personally as have seen many of them fail to do the job. Suggest looking for X.4 Tiger full retail in stall discs, which are black in color.
