There are a number of Mac models that come up with really odd ram specs. Yours is one of them! Apple says 2 gigs (one 1 gig chip in each slot). However, you can put two 2 gig chips in for a grand total of three gigs. Yup. The machine will not read 4 gigs.
If you run your 'Book for a day under normal conditions and launch Activity Monitor, you can read the Page In/Page Out numbers. If you rarely Page out you may only need the two one gig chips.

If you look at reputable ram companies the two gig chips are ~50 dollars and the one gig chips are ~35. You are paging out a bit, the price difference is negligible, IMHO go for the two deuce chips.

Thanx for your help. I am based in France and the best I could get is 2 x 2gb ram by PNY for 80 euros (and are given a ten year guarantee). I guess PNY are not the best but anything will be an improvement

FYI I use ableton live to produce music and just watched the page outs rocket from 0 to 18449 when i opened up a track haha
