Hi going to buy a notebook in about a week or 2 and i want to know your opinion!
Macbook air or Macbook
The optical drive doesnt bother me to much,if over time it does i dont mind spending £50 on it same with usbs i will buy a hub.
also i use wireless so the ethernet isnt to bad.
i think i will just use imovie for film editing as i am a begginer when i have more experince i will upgrade.

Also pondering on mbp but worried about update so that stayed out!

Worried about update? Why?

MBA
Benefits - Small, light.
Cons - Expensive for what you get, no optical drive, no ethernet, 80gig HD, no firewire, 1 USB, non swappable battery, low end graphics.

MB
Benefits - Small, light, decent price for what you get.
Cons - No firewire 800, low end graphics.

MBP
Benefits - Powerfull desktop replacment, good graphics.
Cons - quite expensive (though only $200 more then Air), can be large.

IMO, the MB would be you're best choice right now -- especially if you're just starting.

Unless he really needs a super light laptop or just has money to burn the Air wouldn't be a good choice. Really you get less in the air then even a macbook beyond its weight and size and yet you have to pay hundreds of dollars more. Is it pretty? Sure. But the only reason it costs so much right now is to pay the R&D costs to make those tiny components. When you really look at what you are actually getting for the money it is a bit of a rip off. And besides. A mac with no firewire? No target disc mode, no fast backups, want an external mouse, keyboard, DVD, ethernet? Welcome to more wires then an IMac once you get a USB hub ad hook all that up. Wanna burn a cd? Wanna have a second battery? Wanna do anything at all that isn't wireless based? Have fun with the extra frustration.

You can't even use a good docking station. Just a USB daisy chain one that is almost as big as the laptop is.

I agree with theonegod.

If you absolutely want the laptop just for being ULTRA thin and portable, I don't think it's worth getting. That is all it's meant for. Just get the top-of-the-line MB for the price of the base MBA. Heck, you might even have money left over to buy other accessories for the regular MB to match the price of the MBA.

Just a thought.

I'm sure you'll be quite happy with whatever you choose, GeorgeTink.

That being said, I just want to express my absolute adoration for my MacBook Pro. It's a wonderful machine.

If I were you, I wouldn't go with the MacBook Air. Sure, it's new and nifty (and gorgeous), but I'm sure a MacBook / MacBook Pro would just be more practical. From the way I see it, the only way that the MacBook Air will be a good investment is if you live / work on the move.

As far as the MacBook Pro update goes, what are you waiting for? I just got mine a few months ago, and I'm confident I won't regret it if something new pops up. I'd rather enjoy my awesome computer as soon as possible as opposed to waiting for months with my fingers crossed.
