This ibook is running os x.3 and suddenly stopped working. I get the chime when I turn it on and the display lights up to a blank screen. I tried clearing the pram and holding down c to boot from a bootable cd, tried holding down the option key and get a display showing two arrows, suggesting that it is not seeing my hard drive either.
Does anyone know how to get a command line in this situation? Or is there a straightforward fix?

The same thing happened to me a year ago, after a month of trying to fix it I finally ended up sending it back to apple for repair. Sorry I don't have more help.

restart and hold down command + s
You should get a bunch of text followed by the "#" prompt
enter "fsck -y" (no quotes) and press return
I believe this command pretty much does what disk first aid does.
If that doesn't work you may want to try a utility like Drive 10.
good luck
