For MacBook Pro owners this is commonly characterised by:

* the internal speakers still chime when your Mac is powered on
* a 'no parking' like symbol appearing below the sound icon whenever you attempt to manipulate the volume on your Mac
* the red light that continues to emanate from the audio output port
* only "Digital audio out" as the only output source displayed in the Sound pane of the System Preferences.

If you have these symptoms, we recommend a very gentle and minute tinkle of WD-40 into the audio output jack, followed by gently inserting and removing the audio input jack a few times. At least until the sound is returned to normal and red light ceases to glow from the audio output jack.

Remember, we said "tinkle" not spraying into the jack like there's no tomorrow...

Following the steps above will give you a good chance of restoring your internal audio.

This worked for me; doubtless, there had been dust or smear or something else polluting the macintosh perfection. Everything else people are doing is incidental and only coincidentally will have effect. Sorry, but this is a mechanical issue, not a software one.
I took a screen shot of this post to have on hand next time it happens to me. Often when I use my headphones (which I generally only do to watch something streaming on Netflix) when I unplug them, I have no audio from my built-in speaker till I reboot the next time.

I came here because it was happening - and "Digital out" was the only option listed in my system pref. sound panel. For some reason, I clicked on the audio icon in the top RH of the screen (by the date/time) and the sound came back. Checked the system pref. and it's showing just the internal speakers (as it should since my headphones are no longer plugged in, right?). But I can't imagine it was clicking on that icon that sorted things...

I have a MacBook white, bought back in 2007, upgraded with with Mac OS X v10.5.
I have been reading all the posts and followed all steps indicated to try to fix the audio problem as it appears "No output devices found" and "No input devices found".

Performed the Hardware Test with the Mac OS X Installation CD, and it showed no problems.

Now, I'm also having another problem, that the fan (ventilator) starts spinning really fast and doesn't stop until I put the computer to sleep or shut it down.

Someone told me, it could be the motherboard, that does not recognize the output, input and earphones. Thus, it doesn't recognize the temperature of the computer and that is why the fan doesn't stop spinning.

Can anyone help me? Is there something else I could try to attempt?

Thanks
Axel

Do you see a red light emanating from the headphone jack?

Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!

I have reboot my MBA several times and it has worked every time. I think this may be the fix we are all looking for.

Step One: Open Applications.
Step Two: Find Utilities folder and open.
Step Three: Find the Audio MIDI Setup icon and open.
Step Four: Under Audio Devices will be the IAC Drive. If it Greyed Out, Select and click on “Add Devices”.
Step Five: If the word BUS is in this box select and remove.
Step Six: Make sure that the “Device is online” is checked. Your IAC Driver Icon should be all red.
FINALLY RESTART. Your sound should be working now.

Please let me know if this works for you!
I have tried everything but the sounds is still missing..... i am using lion and it's a new macbook pro...... i did the hardware test, and the midi setup and all.....still nothing....please helpppppp .... i never used any headphones and other audio equipments so far....
