This morning, I too lost my sound on my MBP's speakers. I repeatedly plugged in my earphones and removed them (five times) and the sound w/ control returned. There is definitely something going on in the audio port, since I was using it with my earphones last night for quite some time.
Cheers,
Warren

Thanks for the tip on the WD-40 into the headphone jack. Your solution worked for me but I slightly altered you solution. Spraying anything directly into your computer is very risky and I appreciate your words of caution. My suggestion would be to try spraying the WD-40 onto the headphone jack and then insert and pullout the jack several times. I had to do this 3 times before it worked for me. In truth I might have been able to skip the WD-40 altogether but it didn't hurt.

Anyway I agree that this is a "mechanical issue, not a software one". If you have no success with "gently" plugging and unplugging your headphone plug several times, you may have to get help at the local repair shop. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Good Luck

I'm having the same problems with our MacBook Air. The problem occurred during a presentation with a projector and external speakers attached. An error message flashed up on the screen and we lost all sound. I've read this thread and tried the suggestions, even went out to buy the WD40 to try to release the headphone switch. The one difference with our problem is that no light is visible in the headphone socket and we do not get any sound on start up. Tried trawling the Apple website for help with no luck.

I tried the above suggestion from Lispo and it worked, instead of wd-40 I used some dust off (air in a can) and it worked.

Thanks Lispo for the solution!!!!

Upon completion of Start-Up with the "D" key pressed throughout the Start-Up, the sound icon reappeared. Devices are again available under "Sound" in System Preferences. If someone knows the why of this, please post.

Thanks for the guidance.

My MBP had a little drop of the couch wich might've triggered the condition, although I'm not sure. It was just a little bump on the side where you can insert DVD's and it could've been I already didn't have sound before that but didn't notice because I mute my sound often.

The exact same images as the topicstarter posted aplied to my MBP.

Restart, update software, restart again.. again.. again.. didn't solve anything.

What did work for me was to run Apple Hardware Test (restart while keepin 'D' on the keyboard pressed. The test didn't find any problems. I restarted the computer and I noticed the sound icon in the right top corner was back again. iTunes also worked again, internal speakers . Then plugged in my headphones and to my surprise wasn't recognized. Restarted the MBP again and now it does recognize the headphones again, and everything seems to be back to normal. I ran this test a few days after I didn't have sound anymore, I was about to call service when I found out about this this test in the manual.

Thank you, oh helpful person, who posted the note about power. My iBook G4 was also finding "no output device" for no reason I could discern. Power was the key! I unplugged the cord, powered down, removed the battery for about ten seconds, restored all, and turned it back on. Voila! Sound has returned. Don't know if all of that was necessary, but just in case it might help someone else out...thanks again!

After trying every solution on the net and being able to fix it once I know it was not a hardware problem. Some thing someone started with in one discussion lead me to look into the MIDI Setup. I have reboot my MBA several times and it has worked every time. I think this may be the fix we are all looking for.

Step One: Open Applications.
Step Two: Find Utilities folder and open.
Step Three: Find the Audio MIDI Setup icon and open.
Step Four: Under Audio Devices will be the IAC Drive. If it Greyed Out, Select and click on “Add Devices”.
Step Five: If the word BUS is in this box select and remove.
Step Six: Make sure that the “Device is online” is checked. Your IAC Driver Icon should be all red.
FINALLY RESTART. Your sound should be working now.

Please let me know if this works for you!

Thank you! I was having the same issue on my g4 ibook running 10.5.8. I assume it may have occurred after some recent software updates but I don't know the exact cause. I was searching for answers and followed your instructions and It worked, my sound is back to normal!

Thanks a million, worked like a charm!

But instead of using WD, I used one of those compressed air sprays and plugged in and out into the OUTPUT not the INPUT.

Good luck!

ALTERNATE SOLUTION:

The WD-40 solution did not work for me (red light came on again and again).
The Midi Audio solution did not work for me (no IAC drive listed anywhere?)

Here's what did work:
Put the headphones back in. Restart the computer. While the computer is all the way 'off', unplug the headphones.

Hey, it worked for me.
