I have a mint-condition 5300c that I am trying to make useable for a 16-yr old student. Is there a way to add Ethernet, USB, and a 56k modem through the PCMCIA slots? // Also, what is the highest level OS it will run? thank you

Just a quick search, but this may help!

no usb (5300 does not have 32-bit carbus, only 16-bit), the rest are possible. Highest OS in 9.1 with 32 MB RAM, I like os 8.1 or 8.6 for this system. There is a PDS slot in the back, which can accept an ethernet card.
