Perhaps this is where many of the "hot PowerBook" problems stemmed from. Good to see that it's being properly addressed.

i know apple wants the recalled batteries returned. but i think those could be used as a emergency replacement. should i go ahead and keep my recalled battery?

I'd personally just send it back. If Apple has decided to recall and replace them (an expensive undertaking), I'd assume that they're serious when they say that the batteries could pose a fire hazard. I wouldn't want to lose my house (or worse) over a laptop battery.
