Unbalanced Memory
I'm guessing my MB has 2-256MB sticks of mem. but if i buy 1-1GB stick, is it bad to have unbalanced loads like that to make it 1.25 GB's? as in keep one of the 256 mb sticks in? or would it be better to just take it out and run just 1GB?

you can do unbalanced RAM, but there will be a slight performance lost, but with the extra RAM, you probably won't notice it.

Your computer will run considerably better than it currently does. Do not fear mismatching, it's simply not "optimal".
