I used to run Norton AV on my Mac until I just started using Virex since it's free with .Mac. Neither slowed down my machine.

Typical example of Norton, I just had a PC in that someone wanted fixing because "it's gone very slow". A look at task manager showed that a process called 'System' (*not* the idle one, but one actually called system) was using up 60% of the CPU. After trying various things, eventually I turned off Norton's Autoprotect and ta-da... System process went to 0% and the system was usable again. I kicked it out and installed Panda and it's been fine since.

IMO, the only reason to use AV software at this point is if your Mac is connected to an important Home or Office network composed of other Windows machines. Since Windows-based infected files can still be sent to a Mac, you don't want to be exposing them to other computers (on the network) inadvertantly.

Like Tariq says, I think it's mainly so that you don't inadvertently spread Windows viruses around (through the sharing of files e.g. by disc, P2P etc) even though they don't affect your Mac. However it's so unlikely to happen to anyone except some careless warez junkie trading stacks of stuff on P2P that it isn't worth wasting resources on.
