can anyone tell me please which is the 'command key' on the macbook? i am an ex-windows user and the usual suspects are not responding.

Don't some Mac keyboards only have the ⌘ symbol on the command key? Older ones?

Older ones, before ADB. And newer ones, like the new iMac. And third-party ones. There is no guarantee that the  will be on the keyboard
