i would say 512 is getting to be a minimum for good usage, maybe even 1GB if you're running OS X Tiger. definitely go with G4 it would be much faster.

The last couple of versions of GarageBand require a G4.

The first version would run only in a limited capacity on a G3.

I have a 1.42 GHz PPC G4 iBook, 1 Gig Ram with SuperDrive so I can burn DVDs for back up. Running OSX 10.4.10 and will be able to update to Leopard.
iWork '08 works OK too.
I don't think you would be happy for long with a G3. Fun to play with though.

I just switched from my g3 ibook (800mhz) to a 1.5 ghz powerbook g4 and it's a pretty big difference. My ibook ran almost everything i threw at it. But it all depends on what you're going to be doing, if you're going to be watching lots of video on the web or somehting like that, the g4 would be a better choice.

Either way, I think you'll love either one!

New to Macs. Just bought a G4 iBook with only 256Mb Ram. Working fine at the moment for work with GIMP, MS Office, and Firefox. I think programs are beginning to demand G4 as minimum.

You should max out the ram for your model, 256Mb is the bare minimum you really should have, I had 256Mb in my G3 iBook that it was unbearably slow and finding ram chips for those old models were hard to find and expensive. I upgraded to a G4 iBook and upped the ram to 1.5GB and it flys! Hard to imagine using a G3 256Mb
