I disconnected headphones from my macbook pro and now I dont get any sound thru the built in speakers. In addition, the volume controls and mute buttons dont work.

When I press any of those three buttons, the speaker icon appears, but the circle with the slash thru it symbol appears below the speaker icon and the volume indicator graphic doesnt indicate any change in levels.

ANy suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Uhmmm Try going to system pref. then sound and then make sure the sound output is built in output...if that doesnt work then try reestarting, then if nothing works ask apple (:

hoped this helped.

This is the same issue I experienced. I ended up downloading a couple of the updates (i.e. Airport wireless, security, etc.) and then restarted. It has worked fine since the updates.

I plugged my headphones back into my mac book pro and I could hear sound via the headphones. When I unplugged the headphones, still no sound from the speakers. I plugged the headphones back in, shut down my computer (with the headphones still plugged in), once the power was off, I removed the headphones, and when I turned my mac book pro back on, the speakers worked....it might be worth a shot to try.

I know this was a while ago but there is also an issue with the headphone socket that I've seen many times. If you look inside the headphone socket and see a red light you will need an unfurled paper clip and wiggle it around inside the socket. Then check you can't see the light and try again. It should work.

I bought my MB is Aug 2011 and I had the issue happen a few times. I finally discovered that blowing into the headphone input jack fixes the issue.

If you have the red light it means that the switch inside the jack is stuck on making the computer think the headphones are still inside. This happened to me recently and what I did was take a small allen key (paperclip works too) and poke at the switch until the light went out and it has worked fine ever since. The only problem now is if you plug headphones in and then remove them the light comes back on so i try to avoid headphone use a lot. You may not have that issue but if you do I reccomend keeping your allen key, papaer clip in your computer bag if you ever decide you need headphones on the go and the jack lights up. As far a a permanent fix you will most likely need to replace the logic board which is deffinetly not worth it due to the cost. I hope that helps.

Spread the news!!

Keep in mind: Running OSX lion 10.7.3

Description of problem: for a year now all symptoms talked about persisted: light in the headphones jack, audio not working unless speakers plugged in, greyed out audio.

I have found a fix.
!

1) go to settings

2) click on sound

3) at the bottom, 'Use audio port for:," go ahead and switch that to "sound imput."

4) Plug your headphones, mic or speakers in, or anything, could merely be just an audio plug.

Voila. Your speakers should be sounding, not whatever plugged in. Youre greyed out volume icon at the top right will be regular shade and you will have access to your dorment internal speakers.

note: apparently this tricks the computer into acting normally. Not sure how many of you have messed around with this settings; this was totally happened upon by accident; i now keep an audio-jack dongle with the computer, which keeps the laptop profile pretty much in check.

Live long and prosper
