The MBP would be quicker, the MB shares its RAM with the memory card. The extra 160MHz won't really make a differences.

Graphic designing will use the graphics card, I wouldn't bother if I was you.

if you want an honest opinion, after buying my MBP, my old CD 1.83 MB seems snappier. i dont know why, but apps load faster, OSX even loads 5-6 seconds faster, and it just seems overall quicker. same amount of ram. the MB has a 60gb HD, and the MBP has a 120gb Perp HD. Im not sure but im wondering if the 120 is just slower, because it seems to bog down easier.

illustrator on a MB would be fine.

2D graphic design does not use the graphics accelerator. The only impact would be the loss of a few megabytes of system memory.
