I've had my new Macbook for almost a week now. Just tonight, while charging it, I realized that the charger is scorching hot. I could barely hold it for 5 seconds, it's seriously too hot to touch for any longer. Is this normal? Does anyone else have this problem?

It happened to me once right after the downloaded the battery update. I thought I was done for but it came back to normal afterward. Just unplug it, let it cool and plug it back in.

ive noticed the MB charger is always hotter than the bigger MBP charger.

what you deem as too hot, others may say acceptable.

if its working just fine, theres nothing wrong with it im sure

mine has never gotten hot enough to not be able to hold, or even be uncomfortable to hold, but if you have it on a carpet or under fabric, really affects it, when i had my pc laptop, i accidentally left the charger under a blanket on my bed, and it actually burned my bed sheet.

I recall that when I first got the MBP I didn't take the plastci covering of the brick and I noticed that it was hot enough to blister the plastic. I just held it and it is alway plugged in....just warm I would say.

So far, so good. It hasn't happened again. I'm a bit weary of this problem, because a year ago I had another laptop charger nearly catch on fire. Fortunately I randomly checked up on it and it was literally smoking, and ultimately I had to take my laptop to be fixed. I assure you that this time it was so hot to the touch most people would not be able to hold on to it...unless you lost all your nerve endings or something. Anyways, it was under normal circumstance, it wasn't under a blanket or anything. I'll keep my eye on it for the next week though.

was it charging the time you thought it was hot, and not charging when you think its cool?

I'm not a moron. Are you disputing this happened? I'm well aware that the charger gets warm when charging. Every other time it was warm to the touch. No problem. During this one occurence it was 'scorching', thus my question.

you're talking about the brick part right? if so, i also had this problem just last night, and yeah, it's not just warm like ANY charge gets, its literally too hot to hold.

let me know if you find out if its a problem with the computer/battery or just a random occurrence.

Hi,

I have also been experiencing this heat issue with my MBP.

I have had mine for a couple of months and have noticed that on occasion the chargers transformer (brick) and also the laptop itself getting incredibly hot, practically too hot to touch.

The laptop heats up only in the top left hand corner of the keyboard and long the top where the ventilation is and in the same place on the underside, but this issue does only occur intermittently under charging of the laptop.

I took my laptop back to Apple who ran software diagnostic checks on the laptop, battery and charger and couldn't find any issue. I understand that laptops and charging units do build up heat when in use but this is getting too hot.

Make sure you have your MBP on a flat surface that allows air to flow under and around it. In other words, not on a carpet or bed, cushions, or your lap. A notebook stand can help considerably in cooling and also provides some protection against spills.

As for the charger getting hot, that's normal especially with the newer high capacity battery. But it shouldn't be getting too hot to touch. As with the MBP, keep the charger off surfaces that retain heat. I keep mine on the floor beneath my desk but have it on a small piece of plywood.

If it continues to be a problem take it back in to Apple as it could be a hardware defect that's intermittent.

Regards.

It gets really hot when trying to do a full recharge of the battery and I happen to watch videos or have something rigorous running on the notebook. Pretty sure it's normal. All adapter gets heat up at some point depends on the amount of power that's being drawn from it. No biggy.

It's when you plug in the adapter and it stays cold, that's when you should worry.

Macs suck- I regret getting one. So wish I had just gotten another PC when i got a new computer recently. I know some of it is getting used to the alt system v. windows, but seriously Mac computers are buggy as heck (i figured out why macs don't get viruses- they come with the bugs built in!). There is constantly some new bug or glitch I encounter with both mac hardware and software. They really should test their stuff better before releasing it onto the market. The problem is compounded when there is no responsibility taken for the abundance of glitches or when the problems just explained away by sympathizers.

Yeah this is a hardware glitch I just found today- overheating plug-in unit. Not surprised to find other people finding the same glitch, same way tons of others seem to have encountered the thirty-some-odd other glitches or product defects of the iphone and Mac laptop that I've encountered thus far. It's probably normal for a wall plug-in unit to get warm, but not really hot; mine is really hot and it sounds like this is probably another systematic bug (that will of course get explained away by Mac fans and the company; heck, I was getting shocked by my iphone headphones that come with the iphone and have talked to others who had the same problem- I heard this explained away as normal and inevitable due to static. I'm thinking class-action lawsuit. Jobs and Co. don't seem to mind suing other people when they feel their empire is threatened, why shouldn't they also be held accountable for their faults?).
