Macbook - RAM Verification/Health?

I read something in MacWorld about how time to time it is a good idea to verify the memory in your Mac so you're aware if its failing or not? Has anyone else heard anything about this? Is this necessary? It left me somewhat confused.

Well, if you experience a lot of kernel panics or weird glitches, it's probably a good idea to check your RAM...

There are 3rd party tools you can download, 'Rember' is one I think.
