I use my Macbook a lot on AC power with the battery taken out. What is the worst thing that would happen to my Macbook if for one reason or another my power cord came out?

first off, put the battery back in.

you're running with a limping dog as the macbook cannot run at full capacity without the battery.

you're also risking abrupt shutdown via blackout or the power cord being snagged.

and at minimum you're risking file corruption if you have dirty power or power dips as your're transferring or saving files.

Eric pretty much covered it. You don't have to worry about your battery "forgetting" how much of a charge it can take as modern day lithium batteries don't have the memory effect. So you risk more damage with the battery OUT than with the battery IN

I was looking at a draft of my response, saw that others had responded. I'll post it anyway, given it extends what has already been posted.

This is my speculation...

Almost immediately your system would shut off. Everything unsaved would be lost. Any files that were open would probably be okay, as OS X uses a journaled file system, meaning your files can probably be easily recovered if damaged.

You have the potential to damage your overall file and partitioning structure. While the damage would probably be minor initially, the long term effects of bad pointers et al could result in system instabilities in the future. Disk Utility will tell you if you have somehow damaged the data on your disk.

I actually have pulled the battery out with the laptop, but only when it was asleep. After giving power back to the machine my desktop appears just as I left it, but somewhat grayed out. A progress bar appears and after completing, the macbook is back at the state that it was prior to death.
