I have inherited a PowerBook G4 15" with 512 MB of Memory. What hardware upgrades would anyone suggest?

Yeah, RAM is about the only thing I would suggest. It is really easy to do and it will make a noticeable difference in performance.

RAM, and you can also add a 7200RPM hard drive to make it boot faster and load applications faster. The Seagate Momentus 7200.1 is a great drive and is currently the fastest notebook drive you can buy; I actually ordered one for my 12" Powerbook G4...

If you upgrade the drive, be aware that unzipping a Powerbook isn't for the faint hearted; there's good potential for wrecking stuff!
