I've had this macbook pro for about 6 months now. About a month ago it started making this grinding noise coming from near the power button. The grinding is horrible.
I took it to the Apple Store, and the "genius" updated my firmware, and sent me on my way saying it'd be fixed. Well, it's not. It's doing the same grinding again, this time it's rediculous. The firmware update did nothing, I'm so frustrated right now. This is exactly what it's doing. I haven't heard the beeps yet from his first video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZTRWHINnV4 |

I would say that is probably a hard drive issue. Its the only moving part in there and it sounds like is something rubbing against something else that should not be. Take it into apple and show them again, tell them that you think its the hard drive and you would like them to power it up from an external completely with out the internal hard drive on and see if the problem goes away. If so ask them to replace the hard drive or the unit. |

To ME if the Hard Drive was that loud the machine would not be able to access data or even boot. It sounds to me like a Fan issue. Have you tried checking the Temps and see if it's running real hot? There is a program called Core Duo Temp.
I agree though, I would not put up with that noise for one minute! Something has to be done. |

i wonder if the cdrom drive is spinning without a disk in it.
does it work when you insert a cd? does the noise stop? sounds like your shaving in the background, yikes. at least you didnt drive 70mi today, and get home just to find your 6hr old mbp has about 30 stuck pixels, yike. nothing like 2 70mi drives during christmas weekend to get you in the holiday spirit. 2.4ghz Unibody | Hitachi 320GB 7200 | 256MB 9600gt |

Don't be. Not at all. It sure sounds like the fans to me. I could be wrong, but with all the computers I have repaired it sure sounds like fans.

I brought it in today, wow was that store busy.
Anyways, he was like "Let me bring it in the back and listen to it, since it's quieter back there." ( I think he just didn't want to let the Christmas shoppers hear a grinding MBP =P) He said immediately that it was the fan, and it would need to be replaced. Apple now has it, and I guess since it's a petty repair, they're able to do it on site at the store, so I'll have it back on tuesday because the Christmas rush is slowing down their repair service. Anyways...I guess I'm hoping for the best. Thanks all for the replies! |

Good news, glad to hear they will fix it. Let us know how it works when you get it back. That noise would make me want to drink if I had to hear it even for a minute!!!
