I have a 1GB, 1.5GHz Powerbook 17, which after several years is starting to get a bit slower than it has been.

I'm thinking of upgrading the drive and the memory. I already have 2x 512MB memory modules installed, so unfortunately this means taking these out and replacing them.

The cheapest 1GB modules I can find which will do the job are on eBuyer - 1GB DDR PC2700 333Mhz 200pin SODIMMs, quickfind code 65739 on their site. They're not listed as for the Powerbook, but the spec seems to check out, and there's a review on there from somebody who has tried them.

However, these are still £90 a pop, or £180 for 2GB inc vat. When you can buy 2GB of flash memory in a USB stick for a tenth of that, it seems quite expensive (apples and oranges I know, but still...)

Does anybody know of any cheaper alternatives in UK?

Thanks, David

For my macbook pro, i just bought a 1GB ram from ebay usa..and shipped it to UK.

Due to the currency exchange i got more $ for £ and including shipping came out cheap.. Only problem was..had to wait 1-2 weeks.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1GB-PC2700-333...QQcmdZViewItem

Here's an american seller who seems to selling the card you require. Good feedback rating, enough items sold..and you can even see from the feedback, refunds are given to customers who never received the item..

So reliable..It's the route i would take..and you can pretty much contact the ebayer and ask them whatever question you may have before purchase.

£62 for 1GB, that's under £125 for 2GB .. it is cheap and maybe you could contact the guy and ask if they will do a discount if you purchase 1GB ram sticks? No harm in asking.

That's my take on the matter. Just ensure when dealing with ebay they have good feedback, what other customers have to say about the service, and contact and ask questions. Be happy before you make the purchase.

and hey, if you pay by paypal (recommended)..it's instant and you got £500 or buyer protection cover included.

Here is another one i found on ebay..and it's a UK seller.

Auction though, the person has 4 of them and it ends in 2 days..

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1GB-333MHz-PC2...QQcmdZViewItem

Since it's auction might only go upto £50 ( just a guess) since someone is selling the item for £62 buy it now price

Contact the person, and maybe ask if they are willing to sell you 2 and for how much? If agreed, request him/her to put up another buy it now auction for you, so it becomes a geniune process and you can buy it and pay as a normal ebay auction

Or wait towards the end of the auction, put your bid and hope you win it..

But like i said..keep contact, ask as many questions as you like

Hope that helps!

I'm always a bit wary of transatlantic transactions... but that UK seller looks promising. I'll have a go and see what I can get! Thanks for feedback.

Missed this one (the price was a bit higher than usual) but I'll keep looking. Thanks again for help.
