Macbook - auto log off??

hey, i just started using my macbook a lot more now. i use aim and want to have music playing in the background for example while studying or when im going to sleep... after a certain amount of time though, the system automatically logs me off. how can i change it? can i change it at all? to make it stay signed in and connected to the internet?
