Macbook - External hard disk error

I just bought a new external hard disk to support my increasingly memory demand for my music.. as i was informed, it has been formatted and ready to be used. applicable for mac and windows. so i insert the usb but i cannot transfer any files in/ out from the h.disk. it said that it "Cannot be modified"..
i am new to Mac an i need help to fiqure this out.
