I had two ibooks, and both spent probably 90% of the time when not in use in sleep mode in my bag or on the table. I never had a problem. Every time I opened them up, they came right out of sleep mode and I never saw anything that would make me think sleep mode was damaging. 10% was when I actually shut the thing down.
