I just got an email from a rep at Apple saying that replacing the RAM in the MacBook is ok...but not the hard drive. Has anyone else heard / confirmed this. Also, if I wanted to put a new hard drive in and keep the OEM one, could I put the OEM back in if I needed service??

It was just said that with the MacBook but not the MB Pro you can replace the hard drive. Will check again and get back to you.

Ok this is right on Apple Support. A Manual how to DIY.

http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/Mac...dDrive_DIY.pdf

That would tell me it's Ok. Who did you talk to? I would call Apple themselves and ask them or ask a genius as it's on their support site.

I spoke with a sales rep who deals with local and state government sales. Looking at the pdf you linked to seems to tell a different story. I printed it out so if they decide to change their stance, I might still be able to hold them to it. Thanks for your help.

In the section "Removing the Hard Drive" in the picture under step number 6, does anyone know where to get that adapter? I bought a new HDD but i dont have that adapter to go over the copper pins. the one on the original is part of the HDD. I have dell laptop hard drives that use a similiar adapter but the ones in the Macbooks have a slit on the end.

not sure what you are refering too, those are the SATA connectors I think you are thinking about what some laptop manufactures do with the PATA (40pin IDE) connector on older hard drives where they put a adapter to interface from the hard drive to the connector on the motherboard. This type of adapter is not used on SATA IDE drives

Sadly yes, The only way you will be able to use that drive is if you get a external hard drive enclosure that works over USB or Firewire and stick that drive in it.

I think the only difference is they need to be 9.5mm instead of the regular 12mm i believe.

EDIT: THIS thread has a lot of good info on replacing the Macbook HDD

I thought 9,5mm was the normal size and 12mm the exception?

The adapter on the harddrive should come off, might need to use some force.

otherwise order the art from apple.

can you take pics of your HD t oshow us ? i am pretty sure it can be taken off.

[EDIT] Sorry, didnt see you biught an IDE drive, when you needed to buy an SATA drive, just go back and switch it for an SATA version. price should be the same more or less.
