Does anyone know if my will 15" powerbook play PAL format DVDs?

Yes, because there really is no such thing as a "PAL DVD."

DVDs don't record NTSC or PAL or any other analog signal. DVDs hold MPEG-2 video. The only difference is the resolution and frame rate of the MPEG file: 480x720@30 for "NTSC" and 576x720@25 for "PAL." But a PowerBook can play either one.

However, you should check the region encoding on the DVDs. Apple's DVD player will only let you switch regions 5 times; if you go back and forth between regions often you'll hit that limit soon.
